Aya & Luca learn about pay 💰

Aya and Luca watched a new school being built.

All day, a worker lifted stones, mixed cement, measured carefully and fitted each stone into place.

Nearby, under the shade of a tree, an assistant wrote numbers in a book.

At sunset, the manager paid the assistant ten coins and the worker three.

“Why does he get more?” Luca asked.

“Because he studied for many years,” replied the manager.

Aya pointed to the worker,

“Didn’t he study?”

“No. He left school and started working when he was your age.”

Luca thought for a moment.

“So he has been working longer.”

The manager laughed.

“It isn’t that simple. They do very different kinds of work.”

“Which work is harder?” asked Aya.

“That is difficult to compare.”

Luca thought about the coins again.

“Then how did you know it was ten and three?”

The manager said nothing.

At dawn, the worker was back, lifting another stone into the wall of the new school.
