Mira and the stone of discord

ByNuno Delicado

Mira was sitting by a quiet river when two neighbors arrived, arguing loudly about a boundary stone.

“It was moved!” shouted one.

“You moved it!” shouted the other.

Mira placed a small pebble between them.

“Here, argue about this stone instead.”

The men stared at it, confused.

“But this pebble means nothing!”

“Exactly,” Mira replied. “So does most of what we fight about.”

A breeze passed over the water, smoothing the ripples.

The neighbors looked at the pebble, then at the river, then at each other.

Their voices softened.

When they finally left, the pebble remained exactly where it was – unimportant, unmoved, unnecessary.

Mira smiled and dipped her fingers in the water.

Tolerance begins when we see which stones are not worth carrying.
