Nasruddin and the literate donkey π
Nasruddin announced that his donkey had learned to read.
Β
The schoolteacher laughed, so Nasruddin invited the whole village to watch.
Β
He placed a large book on a table before the donkey.
Β
The donkey sniffed it, opened the cover with his nose and started turning the pages.
Β
At the fifth page, he stopped and ate a few grains of barley.
Β
Then he turned several more pages, paused, and ate some more barley.
Β
Villagers applauded.
Β
βNonsense! You are fooling us!β cried the teacher. βThe donkey cannot read!β
Β
Nasruddin looked surprised.
βBut you saw him...β
Β
βHe isn't reading! You hid barley between the pages. He just keeps turning pages until he finds what he wants.β
Β
Nasruddin's eyes widened.
βAh! You recognized it!β
Β
βRecognized what?β
Β
Nasruddin embraced him.
βThe way educated people read!β
