King Luca's first rule
At a family gathering, Luca was given a chair beside the men.
“Aya, help serve the food,” said an uncle.
Luca looked at her carrying a heavy tray.
“Why does Aya have to serve while I sit?”
The uncle laughed.
“Because boys are the kings of the house!
Girls learn to care for the family.”
“And when Aya grows up?”
“She will marry and care for her husband’s family.
And they will bring gifts to us.”
Aya face brightened.
“Gifts for me?”
“For our family,” said the uncle.
“And who chooses my husband?”
The uncle smiled.
“Don’t worry. The families will decide when the time comes.”
Aya thought for a moment.
“So everyone gets to decide what happens to me... except me?”
The room became quiet.
Luca looked at his chair, then stood up.
“I was told I am the king.”
The uncle smiled proudly.
“That’s my boy!”
Luca handed the chair to Aya.
“So I’m making my first rule.”
Aya sat down.
Luca picked up the tray.
